I could list a hundred voices that just completely soothe and move me, including Karen Peris (of The Innocence Mission), Norah Jones and Joni Mitchell.  It's hard to stop listing the names, but if I had to choose one voice that I wish I could marry (if it were actually possible to marry someone's voice), it would be the voice of Mindy Smith.

There are all types of Christmas songs, but there’s something special about a sad Christmas song done really well. Nashville singer/songwriter Mindy Smith knows exactly how to strike the balance between merriment and melancholy, as proven first with her 2007 release My Holiday and more recently with “ A Holiday Evening with Mindy Smith” last Friday night at 3rd and Lindsley. Showing there’s more holiday sentiments than just warm and fuzzy, Mindy and her band (cleverly dubbed the Wisemen for this show) played a gorgeous set of songs that was relaxed, wistful and yes, even sad at moments.

Mindy Smith still carries a trace of her native Long Island accent.

Though she's plied her trade as a singer and songwriter in Nashville since 1998, speaking such words as "dog" and "coffee" brings out her inner New Yorker. In those moments, it's hard to imagine her as a decorated Americana and pop performer.

Sure enough, it took some time for Smith to break into Music City as a newcomer. She got there by way of Knoxville, where she and her father moved after her mother's death from cancer.

NASHVILLE — Mindy Smith smiled a guilty smile -- you get the sense it's the only kind she feels she's entitled to -- as the singer and songwriter listened to the final chord slowly fade out on "Highs and Lows," the first single from her fourth album, "Stupid Love," that was released Tuesday on Vanguard Records.
